| A great home game to his 60th birthday
Klaus Meine, front man of the Scorpions celebrated his 60th birthday in the Capitol in Hanover on Sunday evening – with family, notables and a Scorpions serenade for his 300 guests.
Maybe he doesn´t believed by himself. Who lives a rock life and tour around the world year by year doesn´t reckon to celebrate his birthday in his hometown – also not when it´s the 60th. But the tour schedule and the fate, or both together let it come true for the Scorpions front man. On Sunday evening he came back with his band from Kiev and so he could celebrate his birthday in the Capitol, like he wanted to do. “It´s a real home game for me. I´m very very touched that I´m able to party with all my friends in my hometown”, says Meine who was more touched as you think about a rocker. 300 guests were in the Lindener venue – notables from all branches. In all the decades in the rock business you know many people. Also in his home community the native-born rocker from Hanover, who likes to come back home, is well-integrated. Also Ex president Gerhard Schröder (64) appeared with his wife Doris Schröder-Köpf (44) and he can name him “buddy”. The same for the minister of the environment Sigmar Gabriel (48 ) and Boxing champion Dariusz Michalczewski (40) who presented him a big golden boxing glove. Hit-Radio Antenne presented Meine 60 minutes airplay, one minute for every year of age. Otherwise he liked to get presents where guests donate for children with cancer. “For all his success he´s still down-on-earth” praised Michalczewski. Also he´s very gentle to musicians from other genres. H.P. Baxxter (42) from the techno group “Scooter” was in the foyer where Meine, his wife Gabi (53) and son Christian (22) were shaking hands of every guest. More guests: Music manager Thomas Stein (59), Udo Lindenberg (62), Mousse T. (41), Hanover’s most popular neurosurgeon Madjid Samii (70), cinema-enterpriser Achim Flebbe (56), designer Jette Joop (40), actress Veronica Ferres (41), TUI chief Michael Frenzel (61), AWD boss Carsten Maschmeyer (49), 98-chief Martin Kind (63) and Schalke ex-coach Mirko Slomka (41). Meine´s mother Erna (87) who came with many friends became a screen star yesterday: Wolfgang Besemer (55), Capitol-chief and good friend recorded a ten minute movie with her and “Siggi and Raner” in Meine´s Hanover. The buffet was also very special: “Spago” added to every station, Italian, Asian a Scorpions song as a motto. Yes when Klaus Meine turns 60th there´s no party without him on stage. Round about 11pm he went on stage with Rudolf Schenker (59), Matthias Jabs (52), Pawel Maciwoda (41) and James Kottak (45) and showed that rock let you stay young.

| “Like every time – let´s rock” – Scorpions singer Klaus Meine about ups, downs, misunderstandings, wishes and his 60th birthday
With much more than 60 millions sold albums and roundabout 100 gold- and platinum records Scorpions are one of the most successful German rock band. Since their foundation 1965 the longest-serving rockers or our country not only played uncountable concerts worldwide – they are also living legends in many countries these days. Ddp-correspondent Marco Hadem talked with Scorpions singer Klaus Meine on time for his 60th birthday.
Hanover (ddp): Mr. Meine, you´re touring around the planet this time with “Humanity-Hour 1” world tour. How you´ll celebrate your 60th birthday between the shows in Poland, Dubai, Kiev and USA?
Meine: Like every time – let´s rock. All jesting aside…After I celebrated many birthdays “on the road” and on stage with our fans in the past, I´ll celebrate it this year in the cozy Rock-Club “Capitol” in Hanover. I´ll celebrate a big party with my family, friends and companions like Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth and Herman Rarebell, where we also want to play a short set. So to speak a journey through time of the band.
ddp: By the way journey through time. If you recall the last 60 years – which were the greatest moments?
Meine: Private for sure it was the birth of my son Christian in December 1985. The birth of a child is the most beautiful, deepest and most emotional moment which you can experience. Musically there were a lot of great moments. For sure the meeting with Gorbatschow in the Kremlin. But also the fact that our song “Wind Of Change” got a hymn of the union and so a part of the German history, it was very emotional for me.
ddp: Beside all the ups there were also downs.
Meine: Without a doubt this was the lost of my voice at the beginning of the 80´. Suddenly everything was on the rocks, cause we didn´t knew what will happen after the surgeon. But the band was backing me every time. This you never forget. Cause just in a crisis you see the quality of a relationship. Basically everything starts well after it.
ddp: Nonetheless of the big successes all around the world there´s the rumor since years that the Scorpions are not well noticed from the German press. To see the medial interest now just for your birthday, it´s not really true.
Meine (thoughtful): Right, you´re actually right. (Laughing) Maybe it´s the impression cause we´re very rarely in Germany. The big interest on my birthday touched me very much. It seems like it is an “easy-seller-item” in the media that we´re alleged looking bad here in Germany. The good results in the TV rankings disprove it. On RTL we´re No 9 of the most successful Rock Classics or our No 1 with “Wind Of Change” on “Unsere Besten – Jahrhundertshits” (Our Best – Century hits) on ZDF. We hardly could believe it by ourselves.
ddp: While the band is abroad nearly all the year the German fans have to forego of many shows. Isn´t it unfair?
Meine: Concerts in Germany lay us very much at the heart. Maybe the fans are right with their complaining. But we need the right scope, like in Wacken 2006. These were 2 ½ hour Scorpions pure – full rock show. In the first case it´s on the promoters to bring Scorpions back in Germany. We´re working on it and time will come.
ddp: What´s your wishes for the future and what the fans may look forward – maybe a new album?
Meine: First and foremost I wish health for my family, my friends and me. This time we´re on world tour. If and when there will be a new album, we´ll see. It depends on many factors. But when we have the felling the world is waiting for a new Scorpions album, it´ll be our pleasure to do it.
